Director of Estimating – Heavy Industrial Planned Succession: Overlap With the Retiring Director Before Taking the Lead Details Location: Birmingham, AL preferred; flexibility for an exceptional candidate Industry: Heavy Industrial Construction Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire Job Description Our client is a large, self-perform heavy industrial contractor serving pulp & paper, metals, chemical and power markets. Its Director of Estimating retires in March 2027, and the company is hiring early so the successor can cross-train with the incumbent. An earlier start is welcome. Position Summary The Director of Estimating leads the industrial estimating department, owns estimating strategy and reviews every major bid. You will make the risk calls when engineering is incomplete. What You Will Be Doing Leading and assigning work across senior, junior and discipline estimators. Guiding conceptual/ROM estimates and detailed estimates from IFC packages. Identifying scope gaps, setting assumptions and sizing contingency. Leading executive bid reviews and project handoffs to operations. Standardizing estimating processes and maintaining cost and productivity data. Required Qualifications 12–15+ years of heavy industrial estimating or preconstruction. 5+ years leading multi-discipline estimating teams. Conceptual and detailed estimating experience on projects of $10M – $250M+. Broad knowledge of civil, steel, mechanical, piping, rigging, electrical and instrumentation. Preferred Qualifications Chief Estimator, Estimating Manager or Director title. Self-perform contractor background. Not a fit: Careers built primarily in commercial building estimating will not be a fit. Compensation 15–20% target bonus, with stretch potential. Relocation and lodging options available.
