Showing the 60 most recent of 1,462 layoffs from 36 states since March 2025. Last updated Oct 7, 2026.

What this covers: notices a state has published online, marked “State record”, and layoffs reported by layoffs.fyi or in the press, marked with their source, where the same employer has no state filing within 45 days. Not every state publishes its notices, some publish weeks late, and some leave out the number of workers, so the totals are a floor rather than a count of every layoff. The WARN Act generally applies to employers with 100 or more workers.

“Also reported” marks a filing that layoffs.fyi or the press reported too. Reported layoffs without a filing are added only once two different publishers have reported them.

The national picture

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which estimates every layoff and every unemployed person in the country each month from its own surveys.

1.64 million

layoffs and discharges in August 2026

down 10% from a year earlier

1.94 million

people unemployed 27 weeks or more in September 2026

27.1% of everyone unemployed, up 3.5 points from a year earlier

11.5 weeks

up 14% from a year earlier

4.2%

down 0.2 points from a year earlier

BLS estimates 13.81 million layoffs and discharges from January to August 2026. The filings and reports in this tracker name 184,620 workers this year — about 1% of that. The rest are layoffs below the WARN Act's size threshold, in states that do not publish their notices, or never announced.

Sources: BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (layoffs and discharges) and Current Population Survey (unemployment), seasonally adjusted. Survey estimates, revised as BLS publishes.

WARN notices by state

States with at least one notice in the last 12 months. Each page lists every notice with its source, the local workforce boards, and that state’s unemployment benefits.

Coverage note: we have no WARN notices from the last 12 months for Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming. Some of these states publish no notice list online, some publish in a form we cannot yet read, and some had no qualifying layoffs. Their unemployment benefits pages are still available.
