Director of Ontology & Knowledge Products

Remote (US) | $265,000 – $300,000 Base Salary + 20% Bonus + Comprehensive Benefits This is a rare opportunity to build an enterprise ontology and knowledge capability from the ground up at a large, highly regulated organisation investing heavily in AI and digital transformation. You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the semantic foundations that enable AI, analytics, automation, and knowledge-driven products across the business.

The Company

Our client is a large-scale organisation operating in a highly regulated industry with a strong commitment to innovation, data excellence, and AI adoption. They are investing significantly in building modern data and knowledge capabilities to support the next generation of intelligent products and decision-making. As part of this strategy, they are establishing a brand-new Ontology & Knowledge Products function. This role offers the opportunity to define the vision, operating model, and roadmap for an enterprise-wide semantic capability with executive sponsorship and long-term investment.

The Role

As Director of Ontology & Knowledge Products, you will lead the design, governance, and evolution of the organisation’s enterprise ontology and semantic product strategy. You will work across business, technology, governance, and AI teams to ensure data is structured, governed, and understood in a way that supports trusted AI and enterprise decision-making. Key responsibilities include:

Define and own the enterprise ontology strategy, roadmap, and portfolio of knowledge products

Design semantic models, ontologies, taxonomies, entity relationships, and business definitions across multiple domains

Establish standards and governance processes for ontology development, lifecycle management, and reuse

Build and lead a new team focused on ontology, semantic modelling, and knowledge products

Partner with AI, data product, architecture, engineering, governance, and business stakeholders to support AI-ready data foundations

Drive semantic alignment across domains and resolve competing definitions, business rules, and data interpretations

Support the development of knowledge graphs, semantic retrieval capabilities, and AI-enabled products

Communicate ontology strategy, priorities, risks, and outcomes to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders

Ensure semantic capabilities become reusable enterprise assets that support future AI, analytics, and operational initiatives

Your Skills & Experience

You will bring strong commercial experience in ontology, semantic technologies, enterprise information architecture, or knowledge management, alongside a proven ability to build and influence at enterprise scale. Key requirements include:

Deep expertise in ontology design, semantic modelling, taxonomy development, metadata management, and knowledge architecture

Experience building or scaling enterprise ontology, semantic layer, knowledge graph, or knowledge product capabilities

Strong understanding of AI-enabled data foundations, retrieval-augmented systems, knowledge graphs, and semantic technologies

Experience developing frameworks that support analytics, automation, digital products, or AI use cases

Ability to translate business and technical requirements into scalable ontology and semantic solutions

Experience partnering with architecture, engineering, product, governance, and business stakeholders

Strong leadership skills with experience building teams, operating models, and enterprise capabilities

Familiarity with graph databases, semantic layers, metadata platforms, data catalogues, or related technologies

Experience within healthcare, life sciences, financial services, or another regulated environment is highly desirable

Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
