About the job
Reports to: Materials & Lab Manager
Location : On-site, New York. Relocation assistance is available.
Company Overview:
A well-established tire technology and development company operating as the technical design center for the Americas, backed by a major international tire manufacturer.
Products span passenger car and light truck applications with a focus on all-season, LT off-road, and all-terrain performance compounds.
Known for strong global R&D infrastructure, cross-regional collaboration, and a clear investment strategy in expanding North American technical capabilities.
Job Overview:
As the Lead Compound Engineer, you will own the development, optimization, and validation of PC/LT tread compound formulations across the full project lifecycle, from laboratory experimentation through pilot scale-up to production. You will translate performance targets including wet grip, wear, rolling resistance, handling, and noise into formulation strategy and rigorous experimental plans, while ensuring every compound you develop is production-ready and process-robust.
You will work closely with manufacturing, purchasing, quality, and external material suppliers and research institutions to accelerate development and resolve technical issues. You will communicate complex technical decisions to both technical peers and senior leadership, mentor junior compounders, and contribute to the long-term materials strategy of the organization.
This role carries a defined leadership track: you will begin with one direct report and are expected to grow into full ownership of the materials department over a two to three year horizon.
Background Profile:
8+ years of tire compound development experience in the U.S. tire industry, with strong preference for PC/LT tread applications, candidates with TBR experience will be considered as well
Hands-on experience with lab-to-pilot-to-plant scale-up and industrialization
Established network with U.S. material suppliers and research institutions
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field (Master's degree preferred)
Benefits, Compensation, & Features:
$150,000 to $200,000 base salary, commensurate with experience
Relocation assistance available as a lump sum
Employer covers 90% of medical benefits costs across all tiers, plus dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, and 401K with matching
