Overview
BigBear.ai is building a small, elite development team that delivers cloud-native applications directly supporting mission operations. This is a focused, high-impact environment where your work is highly visible and directly influences outcomes. We’re seeking a mid-level Full Stack Developer with strong Python backend skills and solid frontend craftsmanship who thrives in classified environments and brings a disciplined engineering mindset to building secure, maintainable systems under real operational pressure.
What you will do
You will design, build, and deliver end-to-end mission applications—from database schema and migrations to API layers and the user experience mission users rely on daily. You’ll support an established platform while also delivering pilot solutions and MVPs for emerging requirements.
Extend Python services and APIs using modern patterns (including Backend-for-Frontend when appropriate)
Build and refine React/Next.js interfaces and dashboards for operational workflows.
Design PostgreSQL schemas, create migrations, and troubleshoot performance issues
Integrate authentication/authorization using OIDC/SAML-based solutions (e.g., Keycloak), including RBAC and secure token/session handling
Deploy and operate applications in AWS environments (including classified regions/partitions)
Contribute to infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and CI/CD (GitLab) in a DevSecOps pipeline
Review and remediate security scan findings with guidance from team standards (SAST/SCA and container scan results), and document fixes for reuse
Use approved AI-assisted development tools to improve velocity and quality while protecting sensitive data
What you need to have
Active TS/SCI clearance
3+ years of hands-on software development experience (or equivalent demonstrated capability)
Strong Python development experience (Django, FastAPI, or similar) and modern API design practices
Hands-on frontend development with React (Next.js a plus) for production systems
Experience working with REST APIs, schema/contract validation (e.g., Pydantic-style), and writing maintainable tests
Working knowledge of PostgreSQL (schemas, migrations, basic query performance troubleshooting)
Practical experience delivering or operating applications in AWS (e.g., IAM, VPC basics, S3, KMS concepts; EKS/Aurora exposure is a plus)
Familiarity with Git-based workflows and CI/CD fundamentals (GitLab experience is a plus)
Security-minded engineering approach (least privilege, secrets handling, secure coding practices) and willingness to remediate findings from scanning tools
Ability to work effectively on a small team: clear communication, strong ownership, and comfort with ambiguity
What we'd like you to have
Experience integrating Keycloak or similar IAM tools; familiarity with OIDC, SAML, JWT, and RBAC concepts
Exposure to CAC/PIV authentication considerations in DoD/IC environments
Comfort contributing to Terraform modules and infrastructure changes with review support
Experience in STIG-hardened and/or FIPS-validated environments (or strong interest in learning)
Kubernetes/EKS and Helm familiarity
Experience supporting DoD or IC mission systems
Exposure to GenAI application features (RAG, LLM integration, embeddings/search)
Pay transparency
Please note the targeted compensation range is provided as an estimate, and any actual compensation offer may vary depending on the needs of the company, or an applicant's skillset, competencies, experience, education, certifications, location, or other factors. The estimated range does not include the value of any benefits offered .
