Staff Accountant – Tax and Compliance

Location + Work Model Portland, OR | Hybrid: 4 days work from home, 1 day in office for local candidates

Pay Range $75,000–$85,000

About the Opportunity

CFS is partnering with a growing Portland organization to find a Staff Accountant focused on tax and compliance.

This is a great opportunity for an accountant who enjoys understanding how transactions flow through the general ledger and ultimately impact tax reporting and compliance. You don’t need to be a career tax specialist. We’re looking for someone with strong accounting fundamentals who can analyze GL activity, understand the business behind the numbers, and apply that knowledge to tax and regulatory reporting.

Why Join / Company Highlights

Excellent flexibility: 4 days WFH and just 1 day per week in the Portland office.

Join a growing, collaborative organization that invests in employee development and offers opportunities to advance within accounting.

Long-term growth: as the organization continues to grow, this position has the potential to develop toward a Supervisor or Manager-level role.

Responsibilities

Analyze general ledger activity and understand how transactions flow into tax returns, compliance reporting, and related accounts.

Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, deferrals, and account reconciliations as part of the month-end close process.

Handle tax and regulatory compliance activities, including sales & use tax, fuel tax, business taxes, and regulatory filings.

Reconcile tax-related GL accounts, investigate discrepancies, and ensure accounting records support accurate filings.

Research and resolve tax notices, accounting questions, and compliance issues, working with internal teams and government agencies as needed.

Maintain tax configurations within the ERP system and support accurate tax treatment of transactions.

Help identify opportunities to improve accounting and tax processes through stronger controls, automation, and process improvements.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred, along with approximately 3+ years of accounting experience; candidates with an equivalent combination of education, accounting expertise, and relevant credentials will also be considered.

Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, and accounting flows, with the analytical ability to connect GL activity to tax and compliance reporting.

Tax exposure is preferred, including sales & use, indirect, or fuel tax experience, but strong accounting fundamentals and the ability to learn tax concepts are more important than deep tax specialization.

Compensation & Benefits

$75,000–$85,000 base salary

Hybrid schedule with 4 days WFH / 1 day in office

Medical, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, employee assistance program, and additional voluntary benefits.
