Layoff FAQ for employees

People remember almost nothing of the layoff meeting. A clear one-page FAQ they can take home answers the questions they will have at midnight.

Nothing you type leaves your browser.

[company] layoff: frequently asked questions

When is my last day?
[last day].

When will I be paid?
Your final paycheck will be issued on [final pay date]. [accrued time off policy].

What happens to my health coverage?
It ends [health coverage end date]. You will receive a separate notice explaining COBRA continuation coverage and how long you have to elect it.

Is severance offered?
Severance: none was offered. If an agreement is attached, please read it carefully and take the time it gives you to review it.

Can I file for unemployment?
Yes. Apply with your state agency as soon as you can; benefits are paid from the date you apply, not the date you were laid off. We will provide a separation letter on request.

Will I get a reference?
We will confirm your dates and title, and managers who know your work may give a reference.

What do I need to return?
Company laptop, phone, badge and anything else on loan, by your last day.

Who do I ask?
[hr contact].

How to get it right

  • Fill every line before the meeting. Blank answers create more anxiety than the layoff itself.
  • Have a lawyer or your benefits vendor check the COBRA and final pay lines against your state’s rules.
  • Keep the language plain. People read it on a phone, often at night.
  • If your state requires a specific unemployment notice, attach it; many do.

Questions about this template

What should be in a layoff FAQ?
Last day, final pay and time off, health coverage and COBRA, severance, unemployment, references, equipment return and a contact person.
When should we give it out?
At the layoff meeting, with the layoff letter. Send a copy by email the same day so it is easy to find.
Do we have to include unemployment information?
Many states require employers to give a notice or a link about unemployment at separation. Check your state’s labor department.
