Looking for a job while you still have one

You can search while employed by keeping it private, using personal time and devices, and telling only people you trust. Set your LinkedIn so only recruiters see you are open, and never use work equipment or hours.

Keep it private

  • Use a personal email, phone and computer for the search.
  • Turn on the recruiter-only open-to-work setting, and check that your profile changes do not alert your employer.
  • Ask interviewers not to contact your current employer until an offer.

Manage your time

  • Schedule calls at lunch, early or late, and use personal days for long interviews.
  • Do not search, apply or send resumes on work devices or networks.
  • Keep doing your job well. A reference from your current team is valuable.

References and the offer

Give references who know you but are not in your current chain of command, until you accept. Resign only after a written offer, and give notice as your agreement requires.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tell my manager?

Usually not until you have an offer, unless your relationship makes it safe.

Can my employer see my LinkedIn activity?

Connections can see some changes. Turn off the sharing of profile updates and use the recruiters-only setting.

What about a non-compete?

Check your agreement and your state’s rules before you accept a competing job.

Is it fine to interview at work?

Avoid it. Use personal time to protect your job and your reputation.
