Thank-you email after an interview

Send a short thank-you email within 24 hours of an interview that thanks each person, mentions one specific thing you discussed, and says why you are excited about the role. Two to four sentences is enough.

What to include

  • A clear subject line: “Thank you, [Role] interview”.
  • Thanks for their time, and one detail from the conversation.
  • One sentence that links your experience to a need they described.
  • A close that says you look forward to next steps.

Practical points

  • Send a separate email to each interviewer, with a different detail in each.
  • Check names and spelling before you send.
  • Ask the recruiter for the addresses if you did not get them.

If you forgot something

Add a line with the point you wanted to make, kept short. It can help, but do not write a second interview.

Frequently asked questions

Does a thank-you email matter?

It is a small courtesy that keeps you in mind, and it will not make up for a weak interview.

Email or handwritten?

Email is faster and expected. Hiring often moves within days.

When do I follow up if I hear nothing?

About a week after the date they gave you, or a week after the thank-you if none was given.

What if there were several interviewers?

Write to each, and personalize each note.
