What is outplacement? What it includes and how to get it
By Justin KullaLast updated
What outplacement usually includes
- Career coaching, one to one or in groups.
- Help with your résumé and your LinkedIn profile.
- Interview practice.
- Access to job search tools and, sometimes, job leads.
- Workshops on topics such as networking and salary negotiation.
How to get it
The employer arranges and pays for outplacement, so the ask goes to HR. Ask whether it is part of your severance, ask to see the offer in writing, and ask when you can start. The earlier you ask, the more room there is to get it.
- How long does the service last?
- Who will coach me, and can I meet them first?
- What exactly is included?
- What happens if I find a job quickly?
If your employer does not offer it
You still have options. American Job Centers and your state workforce agency offer publicly funded help, and some platforms are free for job seekers. See the guide to job transition platforms for laid-off professionals.
Frequently asked questions
Is outplacement free?
It is free to you when your employer pays for it. Ask HR what is offered.
How long does outplacement last?
It varies by employer and provider. Ask for the length in writing.
Is outplacement the same as severance?
No. Severance is pay and benefits. Outplacement is services. Some agreements include both.
Can I ask for outplacement?
Yes. Outplacement is something employers arrange, and asking HR before you sign a severance agreement is the easiest time to raise it.
