About the job

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Mount Sinai Morningside/Mount Sinai West (MSM/MSW) is an integral member of the Executive team. A highly strategic position, the CMO is primarily responsible for leading and implementing the clinical direction of the dual hospital organization and for providing clinical oversight to the delivery, quality and efficiency of health care services. In addition to a strong focus on quality and safety, the CMO manages and holds accountability for clinical governance, infection prevention and risk management across both Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West hospitals, along with the design and implementation of other clinical systems, as appropriate.

The CMO operates within a large, integrated academic health system and must be highly effective in navigating a complex, matrixed organizational environment. Success in the role requires the ability to build alignment across hospital, departmental, service line, and system leadership structures; effectively influence decisions without sole reliance on formal authority; and balance local operational priorities with enterprise-wide strategic objectives. The CMO must cultivate strong partnerships across clinical, operational, academic, and administrative stakeholders to advance organizational performance and patient outcomes.

The CMO will have direct oversight of all aspects of clinical performance, quality, safety, infection prevention, clinical integration, medical affairs, and education and research. The CMO must demonstrate an ability to deliver with respect to engaging and aligning medical staff, improving performance metrics, improving quality of care, and decreasing non-value-added variation. The CMO works closely and collaboratively with members of the local Executive team (particularly the Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer), health system leaders, department chairs, service line leaders, and administrative and clinical stakeholders to develop and implement key hospital strategies, particularly those targeting clinical service development and clinical transformation. The CMO serves as a critical bridge between hospital operations and system priorities, ensuring alignment between local needs and enterprise objectives while advancing quality, safety, physician engagement, clinical integration, and growth initiatives. Where indicated, the CMO acts as an escalation point for clinical consultation and establishes and maintains productive working relationships with key health system and external stakeholders.
