About the job

The New York City Comptroller’s Office works to promote the financial health, integrity, and effectiveness of New York City government, in order to strengthen trust, secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers, and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city. Led by an independently elected citywide official, the comptroller’s office provides checks and balances needed to hold City government accountable for budgeting wisely, investing responsibly, operating efficiently, acting fairly, living up to its obligations and promises, and paying attention to the long-term challenges we face together. The Audit Bureau conducts informative and meaningful audits, independent assessments, and objective reviews to examine and report on City operations and services. The Bureau strives to improve the City’s financial position, identify and mitigate risks, and ensure that services are provided efficiently, effectively and equitably. By reporting our findings to City officials, oversight bodies and the public, we increase transparency and accountability, promote integrity, and strengthen public trust. The Bureau of Audit is seeking a highly qualified professional to serve as the Director of Audit Strategy. Reporting directly to the Deputy Comptroller for Audit, the Agency Executive Counsel will serve as a senior-level advisor on complex audit, investigative, and administrative matters. The selected candidate will provide strategic guidance to Bureau leadership, facilitate coordination with City agencies and representatives, and support the development and execution of significant audit and investigative initiatives. The Director will work across audit teams and with senior agency officials to ensure that sensitive matters are appropriately evaluated, information requests are effectively developed and communicated, and significant audit findings and investigative matters are presented clearly and accurately. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: • Serve as a principal advisor to the Deputy Comptroller on complex, sensitive, and high-priority audit and investigative matters. • Draft, review, and coordinate formal requests for information, executive summaries, investigative reports, correspondence, memoranda, and other high-level written materials. • Assist audit teams in determining appropriate audit scopes, objectives, investigative approaches, and strategies for examining complex agency operations and programs. • Coordinate with agency counsel offices and other representatives regarding confidentiality agreements, information-sharing protocols, document production, and requirements for the communication and handling of sensitive information. • Facilitate high-level communications between the Bureau of Audit, City agencies, legal counsel, and other governmental entities regarding audit activities, investigative matters, and requests for records. • Review significant audit findings, investigative materials, and supporting documentation to assess clarity and consistency, ensuring reports adequately highlight the most critical issues. • Coordinate special projects and cross-functional initiatives involving multiple audit teams, agency representatives, and other stakeholders. • Perform other high-level advisory and special assignments as directed by the Deputy Comptroller for Audit.
