About the job
Responsibilities
Orion Space Solutions, an Arcfield company, is seeking a hands-on Field Service Engineer - Optical Sensor Systems (Opto-Mechanical Systems) to support the development, integration, deployment, operation, and maintenance of advanced electro-optical sensing systems, including Orion's OSIRIS family of passive optical sensors.
The successful candidate will be equally comfortable assembling and troubleshooting optical instrumentation in Orion's Louisville laboratory and deploying that equipment to remote government test ranges, maritime environments, and other field locations. The position requires an engineer who understands the underlying hardware well enough to diagnose unexpected problems, develop practical solutions with the tools and resources available, and keep sophisticated instrumentation operating under real-world conditions.
When not deployed, the Field Service Engineer will work directly with Orion's scientists and engineering teams building, assembling, integrating, calibrating, testing, maintaining, and repairing optical sensor systems.
We are looking for someone who combines the rigor of an engineer with the practical instincts of an experienced experimentalist: understand how the system is supposed to work, recognize when it does not, determine why, and make it work. This is not a desk-only engineering position.
Key Responsibilities
The Field Engineer will:
Deploy, install, configure, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and recover advanced electro-optical sensor systems at government ranges and other field-test locations.
Support OSIRIS system deployments and other Orion optical sensing programs, including extended test campaigns away from the home facility.
Perform field troubleshooting of optical, mechanical, electrical, computer, networking, thermal-management, and data-acquisition subsystems.
Diagnose system failures using engineering fundamentals, test equipment, telemetry, software tools, and direct inspection rather than relying solely on predefined troubleshooting procedures.
Develop safe, technically sound field solutions when normal laboratory resources are unavailable.
Assemble and integrate optical systems incorporating lenses, filters, cameras, detectors, precision optomechanics, computers, electronics, and environmental enclosures.
Perform optical alignment, focus verification, calibration, boresighting, and system performance checks.
Operate oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, optical power meters, data-acquisition systems, and other laboratory and field diagnostic equipment.
Fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical and electrical components, cables, mounts, fixtures, and interfaces when required.
Support sensor installation on fixed sites, transportable platforms, and maritime or other mobile platforms.
Configure computers, cameras, networks, timing systems, data storage, and supporting software required for sensor operation.
Monitor system health and data quality during test execution and rapidly troubleshoot anomalous performance.
Maintain configuration control and document field modifications so temporary solutions can be evaluated, reproduced, or incorporated into subsequent system builds.
Prepare equipment for shipment and deployment and ensure safe transportation, inventory, setup, teardown, and return of sensitive optical instrumentation.
Develop and maintain assembly procedures, deployment checklists, calibration procedures, troubleshooting guides, test procedures, and field documentation.
Participate in pre-test planning, test execution, and post-test data reviews with Orion engineers, scientists, government customers, range personnel, and other test participants.
Capture lessons learned from each deployment and translate field experience into engineering improvements for subsequent OSIRIS builds.
When not deployed, provide productive engineering support in Orion's laboratory, including system assembly, integration, testing, calibration, repair, refurbishment, and development of the next generation of sensor hardware.
