Why this role matters
When an SBA or commercial loan becomes distressed, thoughtful action can protect both the credit union and the people behind the business. As SBA Special Assets Manager, you will guide complex credits toward responsible resolution while preserving SBA guaranties, strengthening recoveries, and supporting sound risk management. If you enjoy combining credit judgment, negotiation, and strategy to solve high-stakes challenges, this role offers meaningful ownership and visible impact.
What you'll do
You will manage a portfolio of criticized, underperforming, and non-performing SBA 7(a), SBA 504, commercial, and small business loans. From early warning through final resolution, you will set the strategy, coordinate the right partners, and keep each decision grounded in recovery potential, compliance, and long-term business impact.
Day to day, you'll:
Evaluate borrower viability, collateral coverage, guarantor support, risk ratings, and emerging signs of credit deterioration, then translate your analysis into clear action plans.
Lead workout and recovery strategies, including restructuring, forbearance, liquidation, settlements, legal enforcement, bankruptcy, charge-offs, and post-charge-off collections.
Partner with borrowers, legal counsel, appraisers, auctioneers, and internal stakeholders while maintaining audit-ready files, protecting the SBA guaranty, and reporting portfolio performance and loss expectations.
What you bring
You bring seasoned judgment in SBA and commercial credit, along with the ability to move complex situations forward with discipline and clarity. You can balance borrower realities, collateral and guarantor support, regulatory expectations, recovery economics, and the need for timely decisions.
Required Experience
4+ years of experience in SBA or commercial credit, loan workouts, or special assets, including SBA 7(a) servicing and liquidation.
Experience supporting commercial loan servicing and collections.
Required Skills
Apply SBA Standard Operating Procedures and commercial loan servicing requirements to protect guaranties and maintain audit-ready documentation.
Analyze financial statements, collateral positions, borrower viability, guarantor strength, and recovery options to recommend defensible credit actions.
Develop and execute workout plans with measurable milestones, financial triggers, documentation requirements, and escalation points.
Lead complex negotiations and coordinate legal counsel and other third-party vendors while managing cost, timing, and expected recovery.
Resolve documentation, lien, closing, servicing, and exception-management issues using sound judgment and effective controls.
Communicate portfolio risk, migration trends, strategy, and loss expectations clearly to leaders and cross-functional partners.
Use Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, loan operating systems, and workflow tools to organize analysis, documentation, and reporting.
Education/Certifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance is required.
No specific license or certification is listed as required.
You should also be comfortable making well-supported decisions in situations where the path forward may involve competing risks, sensitive negotiations, and close regulatory scrutiny.
What sets you apart
You don't need to check every box, but here's what will help you thrive in this role:
Deep expertise in business and commercial loan documentation and servicing.
Experience designing or improving controlled workflows for exception management, post-close review, servicing, or special-assets operations.
A track record of guiding others, building accountability, or strengthening team performance in complex credit environments.
What you'll get
We believe in supporting our team members both professionally and personally.
In this role, you can expect:
Purpose-driven work at Truliant Federal Credit Union, where your decisions help protect member-owner resources and support the organization's financial strength.
Meaningful ownership of complex SBA and commercial credits, with the opportunity to shape resolution strategies from early intervention through final recovery.
Partnership with credit, servicing, legal, risk, and business leaders, giving you broad visibility and the chance to influence how difficult credits are managed.
Professional growth through sophisticated workouts, guaranty-purchase preparation, collateral liquidation, bankruptcy strategy, and portfolio-level risk reporting.
A role built around thoughtful judgment, integrity, collaboration, and service excellence, with limited travel of approximately 5% for training and meetings.
