Optumas is seeking an Actuarial Manager to lead Medicaid consulting engagements and help clients make informed, data-driven decisions. This is a player-coach role that combines team leadership and project oversight with hands-on actuarial and analytical responsibilities. Successful candidates will be expected to both lead analytical teams and personally perform complex analyses to support client decision-making.
Optumas provides consulting and actuarial services to organizations serving Medicaid and other publicly funded healthcare programs. Our teams combine actuarial expertise, healthcare data analysis, policy knowledge, and practical program experience to help clients address complex financial and operational challenges.
Essential Functions and Primary Duties
Engagement and Project Leadership: Lead Medicaid and public-sector consulting projects from planning to delivery. Manage work plans, priorities, budgets, and timelines while coordinating teams and providing guidance. Communicate updates, findings, and risks to clients and leadership, ensuring quality standards and expectations are met.
Actuarial and Analytical Leadership: Perform actuarial, financial, and healthcare data analyses, and lead the development of models, forecasts, and deliverables. Analyze data to identify trends and provide actionable recommendations. Maintain and improve analytical tools, methodologies, and quality-control processes while building expertise in Medicaid financing and healthcare operations.
Client Service and Practice Growth: Build strong, trusted relationships with clients by understanding their needs and delivering tailored solutions. Identify new opportunities for growth and contribute to proposals and business development. Represent the organization at industry events and provide expertise for other engagements.
Team and People Leadership: Mentor and develop team members while leading by example with hands-on work and technical analysis. Offer coaching and feedback on analytical projects, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning. Promote a culture of excellence and innovation within the team.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, economics, finance, or a related quantitative field; Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation.
At least five years of relevant experience in actuarial work, healthcare consulting, Medicaid, managed care, or healthcare analytics.
Demonstrated leadership experience, including leading projects, workstreams, or consulting engagements, and supervising, mentoring, or developing actuarial or consulting professionals.
Experience analyzing healthcare claims, enrollment, eligibility, or financial data.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex information to clients and internal leaders.
Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work within established deadlines.
Proficiency with relevant analytical tools (e.g., SQL, SAS, R, or Python) and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
Ability to handle protected health information and other sensitive information appropriately.
Experience working with state Medicaid agencies, Medicaid managed care organizations, or other public healthcare programs, with knowledge of Medicaid managed care financing, actuarial rate development, healthcare program operations, and applicable CMS requirements.
