LinkedIn About section template
The About section is where a recruiter decides whether to message you. Say what you do, prove it in two results, and tell them what you want next.
For [years of experience] years I have worked as [what you do], helping [who you help or what you build]. What I have done: • [first result]. • [second result]. I am now looking for [what you want next]. If you are hiring, or know someone who is, I would love to talk: [how to reach you].
How to get it right
- Write in the first person. It reads like a person, not a résumé.
- Put the best result first; only the first three lines show before “see more.”
- Use real numbers. They make the results believable and searchable.
- End with the exact next step you want, and an email so people do not need to message through LinkedIn.
- Keep it under 1,500 characters, and update it as soon as you land.
Questions about this template
- How long should a LinkedIn About section be?
- Between 600 and 1,500 characters. The first three lines are what shows without a click.
- Should I write in first or third person?
- First person. It is warmer and easier to read.
- Should I mention that I was laid off?
- Not required. State what you want next. If you do mention a layoff, one factual line is enough.
