Email to ask for more time on a job offer
Asking for a few days is normal and employers expect it. Say you are excited, give a date, and say what you need.
Subject: Thank you for the offer
Hi [their first name], Thank you for the offer for the [role] role. I am very excited about it and about the team. I would like a little more time to decide, because I need to finish a decision I am making with my family. Could I give you my answer by [date you will answer]? If you need a decision sooner, please tell me and I will do my best. Thank you again, [your name]
How to get it right
- Ask as soon as you get the offer, not on the deadline day.
- Give a date, not “a few days.” A specific date feels responsible and easy to approve.
- Be honest if you are waiting on another offer; you do not need to name the company.
- If you are waiting on another employer, ask them for a decision date. A real offer in hand speeds things up.
Questions about this template
- Is it okay to ask for more time on a job offer?
- Yes. Most employers allow three to five business days, and a longer wait is possible if you ask kindly.
- How much time can I ask for?
- A week is common. More than a week for a non-senior role is unusual; explain why.
- Can the employer withdraw the offer?
- It is possible but unusual. Being polite and giving a date keeps the risk low.
