Thank-you email to a reference
References are a favor with no payoff for them. A short note with the outcome is what they remember, and what keeps them on your side next time.
Subject: Thank you
Hi [their first name], I wanted to thank you for being a reference for me with [company]. it went well, and I know your support helped. I would be glad to return the favor, on a reference or an introduction. Please keep in touch. With thanks, [your name]
How to get it right
- Send it within a day of the outcome. Good news or not, they want to know.
- Mention one specific thing if you know what they said. It shows you value it.
- Offer to be a reference for them in return and keep the relationship active with a note every few months.
