About the job
Houston, Texas, About FinOptimal FinOptimal is a Houston accounting firm and software company. Our client accounting services (CAS) practice keeps the books, closes the month and runs finance operations for about 55 companies on fixed monthly fees. Our software team builds QuickBooks Online automation (Accruer, Booker, Wrangler, Closer and more) that our own accountants use every day. That means our CAS team spends less time on data entry and more time on judgment than most firms. The role You will run the CAS practice as its own business: a roughly $2M, highly recurring practice with a US-based team of client leads and accountants, supported by an offshore accounting team. You own the P&L, the clients, the people and the growth plan. The founder, a CPA, is handing this practice to you so he can focus on the software. You will have real authority to hire, exit, reprice and reorganize. What you will own
P&L. Revenue, gross margin and contribution for the practice, with monthly reporting to the CEO. Operations. Own the practice’s operating model: workflow management, process standards, capacity planning and utilization, and continuous improvement. Build processes that scale, remove bottlenecks and reduce manual oversight, with client leads owning day-to-day execution. People. Staffing every client, building a bench of go-to technical people, coaching client leads and holding them accountable for their teams, consistent procedures and training, and making hiring and exit decisions. Clients. Retention, satisfaction and escalations across ~100 entities. Be the senior relationship for the largest accounts. Quality and timeliness. Close calendars, review standards and quality controls across US and offshore work, tracked with operating metrics the whole team can see: on-time closes, reconciliations, AP turnaround. Pricing. Scoping and pricing new work, and repricing clients whose fees no longer match the work. Growth. Carry a new-client number. Work with our sales team on inbound leads, and generate your own through referrals, CPA relationships and your network. Systems and automation. Lead the rollout of new tools and process changes across the team, and be the voice of the practitioner to our software team: what to automate next and what is broken.
What we offer
Competitive base salary plus a performance bonus tied to the practice’s results. Meaningful equity. A practice with ~95% recurring revenue, software built for it, and a founder who wants to hand it over. Requirements
8+ years in accounting, with 3+ years leading a CAS, outsourced accounting or outsourced controller team serving many clients. A track record of running a book of clients profitably: you have staffed, priced and grown a practice, not only delivered on one. A bench-builder: you lead through strong technical people rather than doing every review yourself. Comfort with the cloud stack (QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Gusto/ADP, Ramp, Stripe and similar) and appetite for automation. Experience managing offshore or distributed teams, including accountability and quality control. CPA strongly preferred. Based in Houston and in the office with the team.
To apply, email hiring@finoptimal.com with your resume, a link to your LinkedIn profile and a link to a short video (a few minutes is plenty) explaining the practice you have run and what you would fix first. If a video isn't possible, send a short note instead. FinOptimal (Houston) seeks a General Manager to run its ~$2M client accounting services practice: P CPA preferred. In-office / hybrid in Houston. Apply with video (a plus) and resume to hiring@finoptimal.com.
