The table lists the 400 most recent layoffs, including reported ones outside the U.S. The totals above count 3,238 U.S. layoffs from 49 states since February 2025. Last updated Nov 5, 2026.

What this covers: notices a state has published online, marked “State record”, and layoffs reported by layoffs.fyi or in the press, marked with their source, where the same employer has no state filing within 45 days. A reported layoff that names no U.S. state shows “—” for the state and is listed but not counted in the totals above. Several reports of one layoff are shown once, with the number of workers most of them agree on. Not every state publishes its notices, some publish weeks late, and some leave out the number of workers, so the totals are a floor rather than a count of every layoff. States generally require a notice only from employers with 100 or more workers.

The Sources column lists up to three places that reported each layoff: the state record, then the news outlets that covered it. “1 source” marks a reported layoff that only one publisher has reported so far. Click an employer to see what to do if you were affected.

The national picture

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which estimates every layoff and every unemployed person in the country each month from its own surveys.

1.64 million

layoffs and discharges in September 2026

down 10% from a year earlier

1.94 million

people unemployed 27 weeks or more in September 2026

27.1% of everyone unemployed, up 3.5 points from a year earlier

11.5 weeks

median time out of work in September 2026

up 14% from a year earlier

4.2%

down 0.2 points from a year earlier

BLS estimates 15.58 million layoffs and discharges from January to September 2026. The filings and reports in this tracker name 320,592 workers this year — about 2% of that. The rest are layoffs too small to require a state notice, in states that do not publish their notices, or never announced.

How we count

Every figure on the layoff pages uses one of these units, and says which. The counts below come from the same rows as the tables and the downloadable file, as of Nov 5, 2026.

Filing
One row in a state labor department’s list of layoff notices. A state may file one row per site, so one employer can have several filings on one day. /data counts filings.
Layoff
Every filing by one employer, in one state, with one notice date, counted once. The tracker at /layoffs counts layoffs, so its totals are lower than the number of filings.
Reported layoff
A layoff from the press, layoffs.fyi or an announcement that has a U.S. state and no state filing by the same employer within 45 days. It is labelled “reported” wherever it is listed and it is not a state filing.
Workers named
The number of employees a notice or report gives. Some states leave it out, so the figure is a floor, never a count of everyone laid off.
Not counted
Announcements with no U.S. state (a company’s global cuts, a foreign government) and rows a person has dismissed. They are not U.S. layoffs, so no total here includes them.

Layoffs, job cuts, downsizing and RIFs: one tracker

Employers and news reports use many names for the same thing: layoffs, job cuts, downsizing, a reduction in force (RIF), workforce reductions, restructuring, or mass firings. This tracker counts them all the same way, from the layoff notices employers file with the states and the layoffs companies announce. Being let go in a RIF is not the same as being fired for cause, and the difference matters for unemployment: see fired vs laid off and what a reduction in force means.

Layoff notices by state

States with at least one notice in the last 12 months. Each page lists every notice with its source, the local workforce boards, and that state’s unemployment benefits.

Coverage note: we have no layoff notices from the last 12 months for Arkansas, New Hampshire, Wyoming. Some of these states publish no notice list online, some publish in a form we cannot yet read, and some had no qualifying layoffs. Their unemployment benefits pages are still available.

Employers with the most workers named in layoff notices

Over the last 12 months. Each page lists that employer’s notices by state, with dates, locations and the state record.

Layoffs, jobs and workforce help by county and city

Every state, county and city page puts its layoff notices next to local unemployment, open jobs, the employers hiring most, colleges and the nearest job centers.
